LEARNING TO GIVE AND RECEIVE FEEDBACK

As Lesley so well explained in Rome, Feedback and, of course, learning how to give and receive it, are essential components of healthy movements.

We were told in our second experience of Next Generation to have the opportunity to ask for feedback from people around us.

Feedback is always a gift since reality is our best friend. Therefore, as we do when we receive a gift, we give thanks and, if it is possible we smile and always keep silent when it is taken place.

In this blog we are encourage to post our experience in receiving the gift of feedback, what have we learned and what are we going to do with the insight we have gained.

  1. I wanted just to comment quickly and then more later. In December Paul Duncan came to Rome for our Italy Missional Leaders time. He asked us to do "feed forward" with the
What one thing do you think i should start doing?
What one thing do you think i should stop doing?
Is there one thing you think i should do more of?
Is there one thing you think i should do less of?
That was the most helpful feedback session I have had in all of my staff career. I think because it was so specific it really helped. In the past I have done feedback or evaluations with teams I have led. I think the question of "give us feedback as leaders, where we are doing well and not doing well" is even a little too generic. And often because we have done them anonymously they have felt like download sessions of all that persons personal gripes.

The area where I struggle the most though, is asking good questions for feedback. I feel like I need help in asking more specific questions that will get me to where I want to go.

  2. It is May 18th and so time to place a comment =)!
I must admit I haven't been working very specifically on giving and receiving feedback since Rom.
We have a transparent communication culture in our youth ministry team and we are doing our best to keep on improving that. In our June meeting we are going to talk about improving or feedback.
One thing I myself and we as team must learn better, is activally asking for feedback.

  3. In Toulouse, we try to incorporate an element of sharing or evaluation of the previous week with every team meeting, but we can not evaluate everything deeply at those times. So we have two days per semester where we tackle some of the bigger issues of the movement. At the end of this time we have either some resolutions to problems or some new questions or problems to develop solutions for in the future.

For the exercise that Lesly gave us, I asked my Co-Leader, Carrie to answer the questions given. She is going to be leaving back to the US and I will not have a co-leader next year even though there are 10 people on this cross-cultural team and 4 people coming on staff. But I asked her feedback on what it was like to co-lead with me and how what I need to know about myself that could make co-leading with others smoother. She gave some really helpful insight, even though some of it was hard to hear. She did it with grace and love and I learned some good things about myself.
